How To Watch Japanese Netflix If You’re Not In Japan

The landscape for people who would like to watch foreign media has changed significantly over the past few years. Most recently, with Netflix launching its service globally (excluding only China, North Korea, Syria), this means that international subscribers can now watch their favorite shows wherever there is internet access.

Unfortunately, Japanese video streaming services have different rights agreements than those offered by Netflix, so you won’t find any of your favorite Japanese TV shows if you are not living in Japan without some extra effort. Therefore, here are some clever ways to watch Japanese Netflix even if you are not living in Japan.

1. Use VPN servers

VPN (Virtual Private Networks) are more stable than web proxies but can be more expensive in some cases. The best part about using a VPN is that it encrypts the signal between you and your target server, meaning no one will snoop on what you are doing online.

It also means that your ISP won’t throttle down your internet by giving you less bandwidth because they know you are streaming movies all day long.

When choosing VPNs for Japanese Netflix, you have to find one that has servers in Japan. Otherwise, you will be assigned a US server and go through the previous methods to watch Japanese Netflix.

Another thing to keep in mind is that not all VPN service providers are created equal. Some offer faster speeds for HD video while others prioritize security over speed, so always consult the provider’s website before subscribing if this is important to you. Also, make sure it allows multiple devices to connect on the same account, so your PC, tablet, and smartphone can all enjoy the sweet taste of Japanese entertainment.

2. Use a DNS service

The first method is the easiest and will allow your computer to access the website as if it were from Japan. The downside is that all of your traffic will be routed through a proxy server, which means slower internet speeds overall.

However, most people won’t notice a difference unless they try to stream HD content from Netflix or YouTube. So the first step you need to take is installing a free DNS service. There are many services available. You have to find your favorite.

Once installed, you can configure your DNS settings by logging into Getflix with the login details provided when you first subscribed. Once logged in, select your current location, then choose Japan as your preferred country.

This will automatically change all of your DNS servers to those from within Japan, allowing Netflix to detect that it’s there and let you have full access to its content.

3. Use Web Proxy Sites

Another method for bypassing geo-blocks is using web proxy sites. These are usually pretty straightforward. Just copy and paste the website URL into the address bar of the site.

The downside to this is that it will crawl at a snail’s pace since you are routed through a US server. If speed isn’t an issue, then, by all means, give it a shot, but if you want HD quality video with minimal buffering, then this is not the option for you. Also, not all web proxies work with Netflix, so choose wisely before trying this option.

4. If all else fails, use ProxyCap & Tor

The final method is to download a program called ProxyCap and use it in conjunction with the anonymizing network known as TOR (The Onion Router).

The reason for using these two methods together is so that your signal is encrypted twice before exiting onto the internet. If anyone wanted to snoop on your traffic, they would have to decrypt your signal twice.

ProxyCap is pretty easy to use. You install it on your desktop computer then configure the proxy settings within TOR. Once configured correctly, open up ProxyCap and choose the program you want to run through the proxy servers. Every time that program is launched using ProxyCap, it will be routed through TOR before reaching its destination.

This is a great way to watch Netflix because, unlike VPNs or web proxies, this method does not affect your streaming speeds at all. Just make sure you are using Tor safely.

5. Are there any other options?

There are other ways to watch Japanese Netflix if you are not in Japan, but these methods take a little more technical know-how and should only be used by users who already have VPN, proxy, or DNS services setup. If you don’t have access to any of those, then I suggest going with option one above unless you love tinkering with your computer’s settings.

Although this list may not be exhaustive, it covers the most common methods available for watching Japanese Netflix if you are not in Japan. The best part about them all is that they are entirely free to use if you already have a subscription for using the services. Happy watching!
